The National Legal Aid Service (NLAS) is recruiting 78 members of staff across 30 positions in Nairobi and regional offices. Applications close on 14 August 2026 at 5:00 pm Kenya time, and must be submitted online only. Hard copy applications will not be accepted.
NLAS is a State Agency established under the Legal Aid Act Cap. 16A, Laws of Kenya. It is governed by a Board of Directors comprising representatives from both State and non-state actors, and a Secretariat headed by a Chief Executive Officer, with a mandate to administer a national legal aid scheme that is affordable, accessible, sustainable, credible, appropriate, accountable, transparent, and efficient.

Detailed Requirements for Each Position
1. Director / CEO (NLAS Grade 1) — 1 Post | Ref: NLAS/CEO/1/1/2026/01
The Director/CEO is responsible for the day-to-day management and coordination of activities in NLAS. The Director/CEO is the head of Secretariat and team leader responsible for providing strategic leadership in the development, implementation, and review of the strategy, business, and annual plans to achieve NLAS's mandate.
Qualifications: For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
A minimum period of fifteen (15) years working experience, seven (7) of which must have been as Advocate of the High Court of Kenya
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognized institution
Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law
Master's degree in law or any other relevant Social Science degree from a recognized institution
Certificate in Leadership Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution
A valid practicing certificate or a clearance from the Law Society of Kenya
Demonstrated merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results
Fulfils the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya
Key Duties:
Secretary to the Board
Accounting and Authorized officer of the Service
Coordinating the operations and the administrative functions of the Board
Spearheading formulation, implementation, and review of the NLAS's policies, procedures, strategies, standards, and guidelines
Provision of strategic leadership and ensuring excellence in provision of services at the NLAS
Spearheading the development agenda of the NLAS, including formulation of projects and programmes

2. Senior Deputy Director, Legal Aid (NLAS Grade 2) — 1 Post | Ref: NLAS/SDDLA/2/1/2026/02
The Senior Deputy Director, Legal Aid will head the technical arm of the Service and will be reporting to the CEO/Director, National Legal Aid Service for the coordination of litigation and alternative dispute resolution.
Qualifications: For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
At least fifteen (15) years cumulative work experience, five (5) of which must be in senior management or in a comparable position in the private or public sector

Spearheading legal representation in matters where substantial injustice is likely to result
Coordinating provision of civil and criminal matters among stakeholders for effective delivery of services

Overseeing the provision of impact litigation in Constitutional and public interest matters
Facilitating the provision of legal aid services in Constitutional and in public interest matters

Do Grades 1, 2, and 3 positions come with permanent employment?
No. NLAS Grades 1, 2, and 3 are on a three-year contract basis, renewable once. All other grades are on permanent and pensionable terms.
What Chapter Six documents do I need before I get an offer letter?
