PhD in Economics; specialisation in development economics, macroeconomics, environmental economics, labour economics or a related field of relevance to African economies is preferred.
Other supplementary professional training qualifications will be beneficial especially software (STATA, R, MATLAB, GIS…etc) and large data management skills including modern Artificial Learning (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques.
A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in economic research, research project management, and policy work in an African or international context (preferably in developing & emerging economies).
Demonstrated record of high-quality, peer-reviewed publications in recognised economics and allied international journals (e.g. CABS ranked journals); books; and/or working paper series.
Strong analytical and quantitative skills are required.
A proven track record of successfully leading the design and submission of competitive, research grant proposals.
Evidence of grants won is required as a principal investigator, and/or co-applicant.
Experience managing relationships with donors and funding partners, including reporting, monitoring and evaluation coordination, and high-level representation.
Demonstrated experience engaging with senior directors and/or policymakers, government institutions, and regional or international bodies to promote evidence-based economic policy.
Experience translating research for policy audiences is essential.
Demonstrated extensive professional networks across Africa and other global regions, including familiarity with AERC's research network and peer institutions.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and/or French.
Proficiency in French is a strong advantage.
Willingness and ability to travel widely in Africa.
Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural, multi-institutional environment.
Stable and strong Wi-Fi connection (for remote/flexible engagement).
